Let's Green Our Thanksgiving

  • Most of our feasts celebrated in a modern way are not very eco-friendly. We prepare too much food, use single-use items, buy goods packaged in plastic, etc. But, with good planning, you can convert your Thanksgiving dinner into a green feast.

  • Talk to your kids about what you can do as a family to create less trash and less food waste. Prepare a plan where each member of the family is responsible for some eco-friendly action.

  • Here are some simple ways in which we can “green” our Thanksgiving feast and every feast.

Easy Tips

  • Plan fewer meals: Usually, we prepare too many meals that we are not able to finish during the Thanksgiving dinner or even in the days after. Turn this into a game! Each member can defend a meal they want to stay on the menu and suggest a meal they want to cut out of the menu. When all the members present their arguments, the family will decide which meals stay and which one goes.

  • Prepare less food for each meal: Additionally, you can prepare smaller meals. Does your family need to cook the whole turkey, or could you prepare turkey breasts or drumsticks? What about making fewer potatoes? Can you make a smaller pie this year? Each family has to decide what is best for them.

  • Save the food scraps: If you are not composting at home yet, save all the food scraps. After Thanksgiving, take a family trip and visit a local composting facility. If possible, get an educational tour around the facility.

  • Recycle all the packaging: When buying packaged foods, purchase only the ones you can recycle. After using them, take the time to clean and recycle them correctly.
