Let's Green Our Travel (2)

  • Transportation is one of the industries with the highest carbon footprint. The highest emissions per person per kilometer traveled are from domestic and international flights. So when planning your holidays, think about a national, close-by destination and skip flying.

  • And if you want to or need to take a flight, at least choose an eco-friendly destination out of the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations List (2).

  • There are destinations in many countries, including the US. They make sustainability their priority.

Additionally, consider carbon offsetting programs. For an additional charge, you will support projects that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

  • These projects are focused on planting trees, clean energy, wildlife protection, and similar.

When in destination, consider using public transport to get around. Apart from being more eco-friendly, you will get to know the real version of the place.

At the Destination

  • When choosing your accommodation, search for eco-friendly and sustainable hotels or resorts. Many hotels now go the extra mile to ensure their place is green. They don’t waste energy or resources, and they promote recycling.

  • Some even have their own vegetable garden and serve salad grown on-premises. Others might even be powered 100% by clean energy produced on the spot!

  • A great way to discover the destination is taking one of the popular walking or biking tours. These tours are usually led by a local who will show you all the best places without the need for any vehicle. These tours are entertaining and often include a stop in a traditional restaurant for refreshment.

  • As a way of supporting the destination, but also mitigating further transportation needs, always choose local. Buy local groceries at markets, shop in local stores, eat in traditional local restaurants. For educational or entertainment purposes, search for local tours to discover local crafts or traditional culture.
