Eco Fun: Making a Newspaper Bag

  • Paper is one of the materials that are most recycled. 66% of used paper gets recycled every year, but there’s still room for improvement.

  • Sometimes, we can reuse it before we recycle it! Each additional use lowers its total carbon footprint.

  • To make something easy with the kids, let’s create a simple grocery bags.

  • You will need simple materials:

  • Newspapers

  • Scissors

  • Tape or glue

And Now What?

  • Ask the kids to gather some newspapers.

  • Take one sheet of the newspaper and fold it in half to make a sturdier bag (just like when the newspaper is closed).

  • Use the tape to seal the open sides, so it can't open anymore.

  • Fold in half again, and tape the ends on one side tightly together to make a “circular” shape.

  • Fold one of the open bottoms (make it around an inch), tape it. Fold again and tape it.

  • You just made a very simple bag for herbs, produce, small items. These bags come in handy in zero-waste stores to weight nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and other groceries.

  • Use our free coloring worksheets to learn more about recycling.
