Eco Fun: Making an Upcycled Sock Bunny

  • Unfortunately, it is not very common to recycle textiles yet. There are very few facilities that will accept textiles. Therefore, we should try to find ways to reuse or upcycle the textiles at home.

  • When kids grow out of clothes, try to hand the clothes down to friends, relatives, or donate to charity. Usually, kids' clothes are in good shape because kids grow so fast.

  • Everyone loves bunnies. Tricky, our Eco Trickster bunny from the eBook Green Our Home, learns about recycling at home.

  • Every child should have their Tricky at home. Let’s use old socks to make the cutest upcycled Tricky.

  • You will need the following materials: used tall socks, ice, lentils or other small dry ingredients, twine, ribbon, markers or textile paint and scissors.

Now What?

  • Use any long sock. Select one with no holes.

  • Ask the kids to help fill the sock with the chosen ingredient. Fill a bit above the half.

  • Tie a secure knot to close the part with rice and to separate from the empty part.

  • Use the twine to make Tricky's head tying another knot around the body. The head to body ratio should be 1:2 or 1:3.

  • The empty part of the sock will transform into Tricky's ears. The kids can decide on the length of the ears. The parent should cut it in half towards the body of the animal to create ears. At the ends of the ears, cut a “V” shape.

  • Tie a ribbon around Tricky's neck and paint Tricky’s face.
