A "Green" Back-to-School

  • To prepare for school, make snacks bags at home, to reduce those shiny packages. They are not recyclable and go to landfills. Make healthy nuts and seeds bars sweetened with dried fruits, fruit roll-ups, or dark chocolate trail mix bites.

  • To pack lunch, only use recyclable containers or reusable bags. Pack only the food you will eat, to prevent food waste.

  • Spend a fun afternoon learning how to reuse old paper. Use old notebooks or any paper you no longer need. Make beautiful recycled papers that you can use in your art classes.

  • Get your hands dirty and prepare a few seed bombs. Use clay, water, and native seeds. On your way to school, look for places with no plants. Throw the seed bombs there to grow new plants.

  • Sort through old clothes. Separate clothes that no longer fit. Recycle them in a recycling site or reuse them. Or, make a reusable tote bags or textile pencil cases for kids and their friends.

  • Instead of driving to school, let’s walk or bike. It is great exercise, and also lowers the release of greenhouse gases.
