Recycling Q&A with Tricky

  • Can we recycle athletic shoes? Great news – yes! Don’t put them in the recycling bin, however. See our “Did You Know” section for how to recycle your sneakers.

  • Can we recycle squeeze tubes? Unfortunately, no. This is because they are made of a mix of materials that are tough (and expensive) to separate and get them ready for recycling.

  • Can we recycle tea bag wrappers? Unfortunately, for the most part, the answer is no. That’s because most tea bag wrappers are made of plastic, or of paper coated with plastic. See our “Did You Know” section for more details on this.

  • Can we recycle milk or juice cartons? Great news – yes! To keep the contents fresh, these cartons contain a thin layer of aluminum. Because of it, they should be recycled in the plastic, metal and glass bin, not in the paper bin.

  • Can we recycle cereal boxes? Great news – yes! Cereal boxes are made from thin cardboard and can (and should!) be recycled in the paper recycling bin.

Did You Know?

  • Nike and TerraCycle have great programs for shoe recycling. Nike’s program is free and you can recycle any athletic shoe. TerraCycle’s program work by buying a box and you can recycle any shoe whatsoever. And, you can go in with a few friends to purchase the box and send everything at once.

  • Yogi and Pukka tea brands sell their tea in tea bag wrappers that are fully compostable and use no plastic.

  • Almost all the material of a cereal box get reused. Many cereal boxes are already made from recycled cardboard, and – once recycled – a cereal box may end up cardboard again, or insulating material or even pet bedding.

  • The Carton Council was founded in 2009 to focus on and increase carton recycling in the US. Since then, we increased recycling cartons from 18% to 62%!
