Let's Green Our Kitchen

  • Our kitchen is a great place to start when thinking about being eco-friendly. Lowering not only your carbon footprint but also improving food choices and saving money where you can!

  • When it comes to greener replacements, the market is full of exciting and innovative options. One great replacement is using beeswax wrap, made out of organic cotton and sustainably sourced beeswax, wrapping any food produce or containers.

  • In addition, you can also utilize reusable lunch bags and sandwich bags, which can be great for kids when they go back to school.

  • Another good replacement is to use glass or silicone containers instead of plastic containers, or even more novel products like bamboo paper towels.

  • Kitchen appliances use up a lot of electricity, especially as we’re spending a lot more time in our kitchens now due to lockdown!

  • To help reduce the electricity use, we can replace our lightbulbs with LED lightbulbs which are an amazing eco-friendly alternative.

  • Of course, we can and should also recycle.  Color-coding the bins or placing a recycling chart will help kids find their way around easily, making recycling fun and effortless.

Did You Know?

  • Fridges and freezers use about 20% of the electricity in an average household.

  • Switching from a regular to energy-efficient fridge can save up to $150 a year.

  • This also greatly reduces your carbon footprint as you use less energy!

  • In 2012, it was found that 13 billion plastic bottles are disposed of each year.

  • Recycling one plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W light bulb for up to 6 hours!

  • If we all stopped wasting food, the CO2 impact would be the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.
